3d questions regarding quake, quake II

alright here is the lowdown, and remember any help is good.

-i have quake installed on linux. it works, no probs there.
-i have quakeII working. no probs there either.

...and here is the problem 3d quake(II) is good on my wifes windoze box
and i have the dri drivers and agpart r128 as modules, but the 3d for either quake is shit the fps is so slow it gives me migraines and i cant figure it out. i have an ati rage128(16mb) video card and i have heard that they are shit anyways when it comes to linux issues

any advice words of wisdom and whatnots would be helpful

btw slack 10.1 is my distro
amd athlon 2700+
kernel is 2.6.5(recompiled)(dri is in the kernel no drm due to freedesktop drivers) took their advice too
512 megs ram

any help please and thank you

ATI only has 3d accelleration in there Radeon 8500's and higher in Linux. Rage128's use the dri driver wich you are using but the accelleration is not really there for that type of card. Your best bet would be to get an nvidia or an ATI card 8500 or better. If that isn't an option, I don't really know what else to say. :/

re: no shit

Yes i agree i was jsut wondering some ppl were telling me in other groups and such that i could run it(quake) with this card at good, non-migraine speeds but i think they were full of it well at least you posted and yeah it would be great to get another card but this is more of a pacifier computer anyways. i get my alienware(amd-64, boo-yah!)in a couple of weeks. so i guess i am stuck playin 2d quake and heretic. at least i CAN frag.

Thumbs up lead on getting 3d working on ati rage128

alright you rgonna have to recompile your kernel first we all know how to do that right (ther is a good article in the slackware forum) and take out drm , thats right dont compile it as a module or anything baby -> bathwater allright? but leave agp support in for ati

then go to here: http://dri.freedesktop.org/snapshots/ and get the most recent snapshot of the commons and and the ati r128 drivers.

install them and make sure you are running the most recent version of xorg as well

as of now my games (quake, etc) are running about 60 fps and that is way better thatn the 4 fps
i had before anyquestions please email me and i will help out.

SOLVED!
