openal installed but not found!

hi all,

i'm attempting to install FlightGear from an RPM supplied on flightgear.org. unfortunately i have a dependency issue.

i'm running fedora core 5 on a x86 system.

this is what i get if i try to install the game:

[root@somewhere somedir]# rpm -ivh FlightGear-0.9.10-0.FC.i386.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
openal >= 20050209 is needed by FlightGear-0.9.10-0.FC.i386

i've installed openal and openal-devel and i've got /usr/lib and /usr/local/lib in my library path which i don't think matters for this particular dependency.

what exactly is openal? is it a program or a library? i was missing /usr/lib/openal.so.0 but that dependency was satisfied once i install openal.

hope i've offered enough information. let me know if you need more details.

many thanks in advance for your help.

mike

take a look at this gentoo wiki here:
In addition, for UT2004 I had this issue and had to make a symlink in the game directory to the openal.so.o as I had the game in my home and not a system wide install.
