Just open a shell window via Konsole or Teminal (whatever you use) and run the command "glxgears".

I have an old FX 5200.
Code:
5349 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1069.607 FPS
5386 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1077.047 FPS
5361 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1072.130 FPS
5314 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1062.726 FPS
5363 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1072.413 FPS
5325 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1064.832 FPS
Pretty low compared to the rest. A problem with my drivers maybe? Or just an ageing card

I'd have expected numbers around 3000 with this card - although I have seen people with a 5600 reporting figures up to 6000 so some variation is expected. I'd also be interested in how you did that.
