Extremely poor cedega performance

I just compiled Cedega on one of my old machines (slackware), enabled 3d acceleration, and installed Quake 3 Arena. Now, though this machine is old, I still believe it should be able to handle Q3A.

1.3ghz Celeron, 128mb pc133, radeon 7000

The game is just choppy as hell. I tried decreasing the graphics settings, but that didn't help. I ran glxgears and my output looked normal enough. Are there any issues with this specific game? Am I doing something wrong?

There is a native Quake 3 Arena client, you dont need cedega to run it. grab it here ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake3/linux/
