Doom 3 - Sound Problems

I finally got Doom 3 working! W00t!

I'm having a problem, though. The sound is horrible! All the people sound like robots and everything else is so garbled I have to play with the volume down. How can I fix this?

I had the exact problem. Changing the sound properties from 5.1 to stereo fixed it for me (I only have two speakers).

I've only got the demo of Doom 3, but also had the same problem. For me, it was fixed by using OSS instead of ALSA, by passing "+set s_driver oss" on the command line, i.e.

doom3-demo +set s_driver oss

I had the same problems as above. I finally gave up and disabled the on-board sound and put in an old sound blaster live card. Sound is perfect now. It even sounds better in other apps that seemed to work before.
