I try to install the e2fsprog 1.41.12 in the virtual machine which is running in gentoo OS with 2.6.18 kernel.

After I input the "make install" CMD, the program is running for quite a long time and keeps printing something like:
"checking build system type .... "
"checking host system type .... "
"checking for stdlib.h..."
"checking ...."
....

It seems the program is trying to checking some funtions or lib.


Is there something wrong? Or I need add some parameter when "make install"?
Or it actually will take such a long time?

You don't mention this, but does the make install command finish without any errors? Also: What is a long time?

Assuming you are trying to build LFS 6.7 stable I do see at least one thing that could be wrong and might have an impact on your build: The hosts kernel version. 2.6.18 is not what the book suggests you should use, 2.6.22.5 or higher is.

Maybe this is also true for other versions of the software the hosts need to comply. Have a look here: vii. Host System Requirements and make sure your host complies to it.

In general: If you need to change any of the commands that are in the book to make it work, then something is wrong!
