LFS for eeepc 700

Hey gang,

alright so I'm the proud new owner of an Asus EeePC 700 (also known as the 2g surf).

for those of you unfamiliar here is the specs worth mentioning.

512 megs of ram
2 gig SSD (thats right its only 2 gigs and its solid state).
3 usb ports
atheros wireless card
MMC/SD Card Reader
VGA port out
microphone in/audio out.
intel mobile 900 mhz (under clocked to around 550 mhz I believe).

The stock Xandros OS on it is lean and fast, but it uses a lot of customized libraries so its not very compatable with most packages out there without bricking the OS. and the default OS feels like a palm pilot on steroids. There is a way to get into icewm, but even then the OS is just a major pain and limiting.

What I would love to do is create an embedded linux OS with fluxbox/openbox to maximize the system resources. So a minimalist design to save on the SSD and to minimize the writing to the SSD to prolong its life expectancy, no swap partition (as that writes like crazy to the SSD).

Obviously I won't want to do any compiling on the SSD or laptop itself as it would be dog slow.

to complicate things even more its a laptop, so ACPI with suspend to ram features would be needed. the display is a 7 inch screen that can only handle 800x480 resolution.

The biggest things I'll want is wireless support, suspend to ram, hotplug for the USB ports, MMC/SD reader (this offers external memory and to extend the limited disk space). and for the real kicker, I'll need to be able to install this OS via usb with the image being under 1 gig.

This is a daunting task yes, I'm posting here because I have gone searching for other alternative operating systems and i cant find anything that doesnt expand under a 2 gig system. thus this laptop screams for a custom system.

(my searches have turned up eeebuntu, eeexubuntu, eeedora, eeepclinuxos etc all of which will not fit into the 2 gig SSD once installed).

I'm hoping to get this set up and rolled out before september as that's when I'm going to be putting this lil laptop to work in college.

I'm NOT asking anyone to do this for me, but I am looking for additional documentation on how to get this completed. For now I'll be installing the standard LFS system on my desktop to get some practice with the process and to familiarize myself, and in the background research a way to do the above. I'm posting this to try and draw the expierence of others who have tried this/can offer some insight to minimize my research efforts.

I thank you for taking the time to read this lengthy lengthy post, and appreciate any and all feedback.

Here's some additional specifications for the hardware in case I missed any of it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASUS_Eee_PC#Specifications

Already downloaded the LFS livecd, going to be creating its own partition to start compiling this project up.
