I have xfce4 running. some packages depend on systemd , udev-extras, but the book says " udev-extras is of little use and causes more problems than it solves". would someone please explain this to me ? thank you

If you are referring to this...

In 2012, the Udev code distribution was merged with systemd. Systemd is a set of programs that replace the SysVInit package used by LFS and is much more complex. It is not compatible with the LFS bootscripts and has many problems and few advantages for most LFS users.
It's talking about Systemd, not udev-extras which are a few programs that are extracted from the Systemd source files. In my case, I only need gudev. Other people may need the others.

P.S.: There is sort of big family fight going on right now amongst the B/LFS devs over Systemd and how to maintain it (or not) and incorporate it (or not) into the B/LFS system for people who want it (or not). Until now, Systemd has been a separate book project in a kind of development state. Interest in it comes and goes. Mostly gone lately. But it's back now with the sudden return of an erstwhile resigned contributor, and some dust is being thrown in the air in the mailing lists today. IMO, it's bad enough to end with with somebody resigning again (or being escorted to the door). Anyway, I don't think Sysvinit is going away (from B/LFS) for a while yet, but Systemd does have its supporters there.
