I dont have a clue what your doing wrong. I built LFS-7.9 glibc last night using debian 8 no issues.
post the version check output

Why are you still trying to build lfs 7.8?
and you dont post the output of version check which might be your problem?

and the version check if thats not correct your wasting your time trying to build it wont.
get rid of tools dir and start from begining

Please run the version-check.sh and post the output here within code tags.

Here is a direct link to the Host System requirements page where you can find the version-check.sh script you need to run:

Post the output of the version-check.sh and the library-check.sh scripts here in the forum enclosing them in code tags.

Use the link provided by spiky0011 once your host is compliant and follow it exactly starting from the beginning.
That will most likely solve your gcc issue.
