just to note:
On my debian, to make it compliant, I needed to insure sh linked to /bin/bash and not dash.
I also needed to install gawk and re-link awk to gawk instead of mawk.
Otherwise, debian 7.11 worked just fine to build LFS 7.9 as I recall.
All the best,
Tim

I think this sums up the conversation to date. It's nice that you want to build an LFS system, but you are not ready to do so yet, and until you are, you will not be able to learn much from trying. You will just get more and more frustrated, and what should be fun will become a burden to you.
Before you plant a crop, you must prepare the soil. Before you learn to run, you must be able to walk easily. I used Linux for a couple of years before I built my first LFS, and I'd used source-based distros before that.
My advice would be to shelve LFS for a while and try one or two other Linux distros that require you to work on the command line a lot, like Arch or Gentoo. Then, when you try LFS again, you will find it a lot easier.
Also, I've heard of other LFS users who had trouble working out of a Red Hat distro. The Red Hat family doesn't seem to make good LFS hosts.
