Checking whether build env is sane?

Everything has gone well so far but now when compiling the binutils it hangs up when it gets to checking whether build environment is sane... cursor is still blinking so i assume is live? How long does this take? I have a AMD 64 4000+ with a gig of memory

Ok i decided to play around a little bit and found that the portion of the book that the livecd hints page told me to skip (or so it sounded) might have had something to do with it but now it just hung up on a different part of the install. I am using a external hardrive sda1 with a swap file sda2 would this effect it? Thanks for any input.
