HOWTO build gerbv (gerber viewer) on RH8 and remain sane

In order to install the gerbv (gerber viewer) on stock RH8 do

0. download gerbv 1.0 from http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/gerbv/
1. download libpng from ftp://ftp.geda.seul.org/pub/geda/dis...g-1.2.1.tar.gz
2. download libpng-1.2.8-config.tar.gz from http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...?group_id=5624

3. tar xvfz libpng-1.2.1.tar.gz
4. cd libpng-1.2.1
5. copy appropriate makefile.linux from "scripts" to Makefile in the current directory
6. make
7. su
8. make install

9. tar xvfz libpng-1.2.8-config.tar.gz
10. cd libpng-1.2.8-config
11. ./configure
12. make
13. su
14. make install

15. tar xvfz gerbv-1.0.0.tar.gz
16. cd gerbv-1.0.0
17. ./configure
18. make
19. su
20. make install

I am assuming (with no data which could support my assumption) that
steps 3,4,5,6,7,8 are NOT necessary... but hey, it works for me.
I've build gerbv 1.0 on stock RH8.

new gerbv installed

I was successful installing gerbv & it executes OK - a window is created - but (the big but), the file menu only recognizes "project" files, not gerber files. I don't know if it's the right type of project file, but I tried one of the project files that came with the libpng tarball (e.g., "x86-shared.proj") & gerbv produces the message "Failed to load project." I only want to view gerber files, so why should I need a project file? I don't see an obvious way to create a project file even it I wanted to. I know you said you didn't have input files to test your gerbv installation. I have plenty of gerber files I need to look at. Did you ever view a gerber file with your install? Has anyone you know (or don't know) every viewed a gerber file with gerbv?

Yes, it works for me.

Try the following. At the command prompt type

man gerbv

you will get on the screen

SYNOPSIS
gerbv [OPTIONS] [gerberfile[s]]

etc etc etc

and then scroll down 'til the chapter PROJECTS
