yum repo - question about updating

Is there a way to clone a pkg profile to trick yum into updating based on another computer's pkg profile?

RHEL 5.7

Hi....

Untested idea: how about copying the entire content of /var/lib/rpm directory from the reference machine ?

We are trying to build a repo - and previously I was unaware of yum-utils package.

So what my plan was - I was going to create a pkg profile for each internal box and when I needed to update it I was going to load pkg profile download updates w/dependencies and then load them to internal boxes as needed.

Not the most efficient plan, but after hours of researching it is something I knew i could figure out and build;

During researching errors I came across yum-utils pkg and attempted to reposync it to a rhel server and was able to see/grab packages. So now that is the plan of action.

Hi

Oh, so you're creating repo. OK, now I understand why you use reposync.

thanks for explaining your situation. And yes, I think creating repo is your best solution.

BTW, creating mirror of repo might need large space. If you have insufficient space, you could consider using Squid to cache yum access. The trick is to enlarge cache object size into quite large one, say 30 MB and make them stay as long as needed in disk cache.

It's a virtual machine on san, should have the space. If not we can extend. Although i do like proxy idea, when I tried to explain that I wanted a proxy repo everyone at work sort of looked at me like I was going to have to move a mountain to set it up.

I'm still really new to sa, as well as linux. Our senior linux person just left so all of this got thrown on me as a junior. The other SA's are all solaris guys so it has been pretty interesting. I've really had to learn a lot and fast.
