Why Is There No Write Access On NFS Mounted Filesystem?

Hi All,

I have a NFS Server (RHEL 5.9) and 2 NFS Clients (both RHEL 6.4). We use a generic user:group across all 3 servers in order to manipulate files etc (slink:servlink).

The issue I have is that everything works correctly from NFSClient02 and all files are accessible as read/write. However from NFSClient01 all files are accessible as read only.

In fact when the mount command is issued from NFSClient01, the user and group ownership on the mountpoint change from slink:servlink to xguest:xguest. See below:

1. on NFSClient01
# ls -l
total 24
drwxrwsr-x. 7 xguest xguest 4096 Oct 8 10:38 spattach-data

2. on NFSClient02
# ls -l
total 24
drwxrwsr-x. 7 slink servlink 4096 Oct 8 10:38 spattach-data

Can anyone suggest why this is happening?

can you try
Quote:
ls -ln
on both systems? i have a feeling you will get the same user id for both user.
That's probably the cause of the problem

That proves my point, apparently uid 500 on system 01 is not assigned to the "slink" user but to user "xguest". You can verify that from /etc/passwd.
As to what you can do, you can either exchange uids between the tw users on 02 or, if it suits your needs, add the "slink" user to group "xguest".

Rather than mess about with uid's (and have the potential for really screwing something up), I added the "slink" user to the "xguest" group. I also had to make some changes to sub directory permissions. Once complete, everything now appears to be working as intended.

Many thanks for your replies in relation to the issue. Really appreciate your time.
