nfs, can't read +6GB files from mounted filesystem

hello
i'm trying to read a few files from a nfs server ,
i can read almost all of them except a few large files
i get the following error with cp

Code:
cp: cannot stat /mount/file.ext Input/output error
ls -l shows a lot of ???? instead of the file attributes

the files are 6GB and up, they look normal from the server
computer and both ls and stat display their output normally
however i get that error when i try to read the files
using the client computer

i have checked the server filesystem using e2fsck and
got the same results

what can i do to solve that problem? i have transferred all the
files except the large ones, i am running debian lenny on the
server and debian squeeze on the client

thanks for your help!

Input/output error would suggest the file system is corrupt..what is the output of

tail -f /var/log/messages
