In my limited experience, this usually means that your monitor is either A) trying to get the signal from the wrong input or B) my machine wasn't on.

I would try figuring out if it has more than one input and switch to use the correct one. Hopefully that's the only problem...

Did you changed your keyboard, mouse or moniter or monitor settings???
if it is or not.,
If you are using RHEL 3,
edit GRUB , boot to level 3(init 3)
then after login in tty
try
redhat-config-mouse
redhat-config-keyboard
redhat-config-monitor
redhat-config-xfree86
(If it fails ), then try with default by redhat-config-xfree86 --noui
If it settles.,, go for init 5

If you are using RHEL 4,
try this
system-config-keyboard
system-config-mouse
system-config-display

you can troubleshoot with options
system-config-display --help(rhel4)
redhat-config-xfee86 --help(rhel3)
All the best

while you boot your system , when GRUB appears press 'e' to edit (choose kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-5.EL ro root=LABEL=/1 rhgb quiet(this is a RHEL 4) ). Once edit the line delete from end and make it as kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-5.EL ro root=LABEL= /3. then press escape to return and press b to boot.
