I 'm trying to install a mysql server on my Linux REL3.0 machine. Satndard steps (configure, make , make install) pass successfully. The next required step is to create the rights table using bin/mysql_install_db.
At this level, I'm blocked, because the script tries to create the directory /var/lib/mysql/ and write inside it. But I'm not making the install as a root, and don't like to do it.
could you please help me fix this?

1) why compile it yourself? mysql is on your redhat cd's in rpm waiting to be installed in seconds flat.

2) you can't have a system wide installation without doing as root. as much as it's commendable to use root only when necessary, this is a necessary time.
