konica 7135 and ubuntu 9.10 working over a network
hi all,
I need to get a konica 7135 that can do postscript out of the box to print from an ubuntu 9.10 computer across the network. I did find the ppd file for it but I am still having two problems: 1) it still says that some program is not installed and 2) I need to change the port number to 10001 (in Windows xp it defaults to 9100 and is easy to change) and I do not know where I can do that. I tried to set it up with cups and that is as far as I got. Any ideas?
They also have a konica 7030 that is pcl only. the printer guy says he can add ps for $150 but the company won't go for that. all the current computers are windows xp and this is the first one that has linux on it. so if the printing doesn't work out it will be a windows shop forever.

thanks,

Would love to help, but can't really, until you provide details. You say in point (1) "some program is not installed"...how about telling us WHAT program, and we can help you get it going? And (2), WHAT is telling you to change the port #???
Normally, Linux has no problems doing such things. If the device can see Windows shared printers, it can see printers shared through Samba.
The Ubuntu machine is a couple of doors down the hall and I don't have access to it all the time. I didn't take detailed noted (should have) during the install, thought it would be easy. I will try it again this afternoon. I don't know all the files/directories that were created during the install process. I know that the printing que was created and that the ppd file (something like ku43322u.ppd) was made and that I had to move it to a special directory. The missing program was something like "kmconfig" spelling probably not exact.
I am sure the printer software is not smart enough to do a port scan on all 65535 ports and pick the right one from the beginning. I have to change the number manually in XP so I assumed that I would have to do the same thing in Linux. The printer is a stand alone with an ethernet connection, it is not hooked to a computer and shared.
I did some more work on it and got to the following point, when I try to print a test page it says:
"stopping job because the scheduler could not execute the filter." Something to be installed or a permissions problem?
From my reading I thought that only non-postscript printers needed filters.
I also found out during the install procedure that there is a place to set the port number. Seems the default is 9100 and konica ignores it and uses a different number.
Well, I'll check back monday for any feedback, on my way home.
thanks to all,
charles......
