display shuts down on startup before loading desktop
After installing rhel3 it loads to where graphicical desktop should load then screen goes blank. radeon 9200 graphics card check video cable is displayed after monitor Xflat XF-70 power is turned off then back on. can anyone help?
Press crtl+alt+F2 to bring up a console. Log in as root, and check your logs for X. It sounds like either the screen or display drivers are not setup correctly.
Try this... Boot off of the first CD, and select Rescue Disk. Open /etc/inittab and set the default run level to 1. Save the file and reboot. This will boot you into single user mode without a gui. Log in as root and run xorgconfig to reconfigure X. After your new xorg.conf file is written, edit inittab again and set the run level back to 5. Save and reboot.
no I didn't. I have only been into linux for about a year and have used redhat 9 and fodora and want to set up an ISP with RHEL as the server and am about to take a class for RHCE over the internet and havent done alot of programing. tried everything I know and have not been able to get to the password screen even. am going to install my other video card (radeon 9550) to see if the other card (9200) is the problem. Let you know how it goes. Let me know how to compile Kernel or if this may even help. Thanks for all suggestions.
If you aren't getting to a log on screen and you are able to see the text going by as the system boots (gdm in Redhat's case) then something is amiss with your xorg config. Recompiling the kernel is not going to help, although that's quite the adventure in itself.
