Display Problem When X Shuts Down

when i log out and the X server is shutdown, i get a snowy pattern. i am in fact at the CLI, but the display does not appear to be operating at the correct refresh rate. i can type and do a startx and get back in X and am OK there (if i don't make a typo. can't read what you're typing). when i first boot up (init level 3), i get a perfectly normal appearing CLI.

i'm running FC3/x86_64 on an HP laptop with WXGA monitor and nVidia graphics card.

has anyone run across this and fixed. helping hand appreciated.
