Raspberry Pi 3 arrives with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth baked in

Quote:
The new edition of the credit-card-sized computer is 50 percent faster than its predecessor and still costs $35.

The new edition is powered by a 1.2GHz, 64-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 CPU, a step up over the 900MHz, 32-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 processor used in the previous models. The processor upgrade and other improvements make it 50 percent faster than the Pi 2 in 32-bit mode and 10 times faster than the original Pi, according to Upton.

I guess do your own digging to find one available. You know how these things sell out when first released.

I was real surprised they are available in Aus already. So I got one.
Surely it's time USB3 was included. And a bit more RAM ...

First ARM for me, so just a learning experience.

Hi,

Looks very promising;

Raspberry Pi 3 on sale now at $35

Exactly four years ago, on 29 February 2012, we unleashed the original 256MB Raspberry Pi Model B on a largely unsuspecting world. Since then, we’ve shipped over eight million units, including three million units of Raspberry Pi 2, making us the UK’s all-time best-selling computer. The Raspberry Pi Foundation has grown from a handful of volunteers to have over sixty full-time employees, including our new friends from Code Club. We’ve sent a Raspberry Pi to the International Space Station and are training teachers around the world through our Picademy program.
In celebration of our fourth birthday, we thought it would be fun to release something new. Accordingly, Raspberry Pi 3 is now on sale for $35 (the same price as the existing Raspberry Pi 2), featuring:
  • A 1.2GHz 64-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 CPU (~10x the performance of Raspberry Pi 1)
  • Integrated 802.11n wireless LAN and Bluetooth 4.1
  • Complete compatibility with Raspberry Pi 1 and 2
To get one or two from;
Quote:
Raspberry Pi 3 is available to buy today from our partners element14 and RS Components, and other resellers. You’ll need a recent NOOBS or Raspbian image from our downloads page. At launch, we are using the same 32-bit Raspbian userland that we use on other Raspberry Pi devices; over the next few months we will investigate whether there is value in moving to 64-bit mode.

That's great.

On a similar note, a new ODROID-C2 is out but slightly more expensive than RPI3. These are the specs

KEY FEATURES

Powerful Linux/Android Computer
2.0GHz 64-bit quad-core CPU, 2GB DDR3 RAM
Multi-core GPU ( 5 core GPU capable of displaying 4K video at 60fps )
10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet with RJ-45 LAN jack
4 x high speed USB2.0 host ports
40 GPIO pins + 7 I2S pins (quasi-Raspberry Pi compatible - pins 37, 38, and 40 are not compatible with the Pi B+

For $41.95

These are two great upgrades for both RPI3 and ODROID-C2. I hope they both do well.

but, worth a mention

On the other hand, it lacks three of the key features of the Raspberry Pi 3: built-in WiFi and Bluetooth and a huge community of people already developing software and accessories for the platform.

I definitely agree with that. And The raspberry PI is more of a well known household name than other embedded devices and has a big backing from the community behind it.

I have been watching Odroid very closely. Arch has builds for both, so it was a pretty close race for me.
Availibility won.
