Where do I go from here?

Posted 06-25-2009 at 01:08 AM by Shingoshi

Ok. So I told you about this project that just drove me nuts. And now I'm having to start all over again. In the process of doing that, I'm having to make some essential decisions. The first item on my agenda is, "what do I intend to do with this new system I'm in the process of building?

I have been wanting to build a system which would allow all the developers of a single distribution to build all of their applications in a single unified environment. That means that every application that's available to the user, must be installed on the build system. And there must also be a means for the developers to test those applications to ensure that they work as intended. It may also require that there is a group of users who cooperate in the testing of those applications, to increase the degree of feedback that can be provided to the developers.

Since so many users have personal preferences that other users may not have, it stands to reason that the more testers there are, the more likely any one application is going to be tested. This is the kind of system I want to build and operate. Doing this, will also provide a good means to test the security of the system itself.

So at some point, I will be soliciting Linux users to participate in this project. And I'm hoping I won't have to twist arms to get this done. The first step is to get developers involved. They are likely to be the ones who determine what will be provided, and how things function.

One of the most important features that I believe should be provided by a system like this, is bug reporting, tracking and elimination. So bugzilla should and will be an integral component of this system. Secondarily, this requires that applications be built with debugging symbols included. The debug symbols may be shipped as separate packages, but they absolutely must be there. The main objective of this system is to create the highest level of stability possible. System integrity must be absolute.

The remaining details I leave up to others to discuss here. Please feel free to contribute in a manner that will help this project progress.
