Xubuntu too much for Dell Laptop -Alternatives?

Hi folks,

Linux newbie here. I've been playing with Ubuntu on a desktop and the server version on a dell poweredge, but knew that Ubuntu 7.10 was gonna be too much for my old Dell Latitude 300. As I'm only familiar with the Ubuntu distro's, I read that Xubuntu had less hardware requirements so I thought that would be the answer for the old Dell laptop. Unfortunately, it's too slow and kludgy on the laptop, and yet it's also too new... when installing it gave a message that 2000 was the cutoff for acpi and it discovered my laptop was a 1999. Wouldn't properly recognize that Neomagic video card either, and it left me with a 640 res screen, which when I tried to increase it, reverted to a CLI only.
My question is this. Is there a distro with a graphical desktop similar to Xubuntu which would be less hardware intensive? Would an earlier version of Xubuntu be more likely to run faster and recognize my videocard, and , if so, how much earlier should I go?

TIA

Rick
