xubuntu on dell 233, maybe

Hi. I am totally new to linux, and i may be in over my head...I formatted the hard disk, so now old nasty 98 is off of my old krusty laptop. I have the xubuntu alt disk. put it in, and...???
I will be going to the library tomorrow apparently, so good book answers are helpful too, but what do I do next? It says invalid system disk, replace and press key. this machine is an old dell 233 with 96 ram. I tried the ubuntu live disk on my good machine, and was very impressed, so now have jumped into the deep end with the old one. I realize this machine is not going to run ubuntu, so that's why I got xubuntu. I am specifically interested in learning about installing a lamp server, or basically just learning. Thanks in advance for any help. Next move?

help a nooby out yo.

I got it. I didn't burn cd as an ISO. Installing now. Not so stupid after all. Now, what do I type in for http proxy info? Is it something to do with my ISP. I really don't know much about proxys. Also, it says that no ethernet card is detected. Should I hook up to the modem and such before starting install? Or more specifically, can I configure my connection after install? Also, couldn't dwnld "xsfprogs"???? Is that bad? I continued anyway so I'll just see what it does. I can always do it again right?
