SuSe 9.1 nightmare with YOU

I did a fresh install of SuSE 9.1 pro using all the default settings.
The computer hardware and settings were exactly the same as the last install.
This time Yast online updater: YOU tries to update or install everything on C:windows which is hda1 rather than hda3 which is Linux. I can unmount windows, but then on reboot it goes back. Also the Yast "installation into" tool is useless and does not give you anyway to change anything. If you click "default" it simply removes the entry and your system will not update or install anything anymore.
I am clueless. Could this be an issue with the way SuSE uses the 2.6 kernel again? I can reboot into windows fine. I cannot post to this board through Konqueror anymore it simply logs me out everytime and the system freezes as if its out of memory. Yast tells me I am out of memory: in Windows.

(anybody want to buy 9.1 pro for $50, box and books included?) I spent $100 on this and still can't get it to work. I am going to try a minimal install with lilo rather than grub.

Thanks for any pointers.

I don't know if you saw it or not, but many are having problems installing Fedora 2, MDK 10, and SUSE 9.1 on the same hard drive as Windows. It seems the linux partitioner (parted, I think) messes with the logical geometry of the HD and messes up the partition table on the MBR. I don't know if this is what you are facing.

See this link:
http://lwn.net/Articles/86835 for info, even though it only covers Fedora Core 2.

Thanks,
Yes I saw this. I'm going to try the patch. My thought was that this machine was not a problem: I have bios set to LBA also.
Booting is not a problem, but this may be related.

Thom,

I have a dual boot system with WinXP Pro and while I did a lot of prep to get it going...I had NO PROBLEMS installling SuSE. I did the partitioning BEFORE I installed anything...with a separte NTFS Partition for XP, a FAT32 Partition for file sharing between Win and Linux and an unformated area for Linux to partition.

I'm not sure if that would work or would even be feasible for you but it may be worth a try.

Regards,
Paul
