Over easter I actually found the possible cause which could be rather hardware related. The main board I use is a MSI 845 e max2 which seems to have an Intel USB 1.1 controller on board with an extension of 2 ports for USB 2.0.
I have not yet figured out the exact configuration, but plugging the printer into the front side USB ports (which are supposed to be 2.0) solves the problem. The same b.t.w. is true for my memory stick which is a USB 1.1 device. The Scanner (USB 2.0) has no problems in whatever port.
So the solution seems to be to just try different USB ports until it works.

Well, I've noticed that SuSE has a few intermittant problems with older USB.
I had a similar problem with a USB mouse on a system that had older USB.
Eventually, I thot the mouse bad, or SuSE just couldn't handle the USB correctly until I saw how well it handles my Boomslang Razor on my personal box.
So, I installed a USB2.0 on the previous box, and viola!
i have a similar problem running Suse 9.0 on my desktop. It does that exact problem when any usb hardware is plugged in, but it remains locked up even if the hardware is removed. To further the problem, it does this even after it's completely booted. Any ideas?
My usb ports are all 2.0. The chipset is an SiS 7001 usb controller....OHCI.
Make sure that you have legacy USB support disabled in you bios. It may say something different that legacy like dos support devices? Just enable USB support
