Suse 9.0: hangs on boot hotplugging [... usb ..

I have just installed Suse 9.0 on my system and everything seems to work fine, except:

The boot hangs at

hotplugging devices [ ... usb ..

until I disconnect my USB printer, an Epson Stylus 795 EX (which also has an integrated
PCMCIA slot for memory cards).

After that booting continues. Reconnecting the printer after booting seems to be
fine, the printer works without problems.

The same problem seems to occur when try using usbview. It hangs until I disconnect
the printer.

Any hints?

I'd just do that, it's not that big of a deal, or else can try to set it up using yast2

Lightbulb USB 2.0 / 1.1 trouble

Over easter I actually found the possible cause which could be rather hardware related. The main board I use is a MSI 845 e max2 which seems to have an Intel USB 1.1 controller on board with an extension of 2 ports for USB 2.0.

I have not yet figured out the exact configuration, but plugging the printer into the front side USB ports (which are supposed to be 2.0) solves the problem. The same b.t.w. is true for my memory stick which is a USB 1.1 device. The Scanner (USB 2.0) has no problems in whatever port.

So the solution seems to be to just try different USB ports until it works.

Well, I've noticed that SuSE has a few intermittant problems with older USB.
I had a similar problem with a USB mouse on a system that had older USB.

Eventually, I thot the mouse bad, or SuSE just couldn't handle the USB correctly until I saw how well it handles my Boomslang Razor on my personal box.
So, I installed a USB2.0 on the previous box, and viola!

I have this problem with various hardware. My solution, inspired by my laziness, is to unplug the devices in question prior to booting.

Not as much as a problem as it would seem either. My desktop rarely gets booted, and on my laptop it's just a matter of plugging things in later.

i have a similar problem running Suse 9.0 on my desktop. It does that exact problem when any usb hardware is plugged in, but it remains locked up even if the hardware is removed. To further the problem, it does this even after it's completely booted. Any ideas?

My usb ports are all 2.0. The chipset is an SiS 7001 usb controller....OHCI.

Make sure that you have legacy USB support disabled in you bios. It may say something different that legacy like dos support devices? Just enable USB support
