Hi, I work in a small office. We are a subsidiary of a larger company in the US. We have no local server and connect to our central server via VPN. So we have a router running a business broadband plan which we use for our internet connection.

I have found an old PC running centos in the office. I am thinking of setting this up as a local server. What I am thinking is if I set up a samba share on this centos system, then all our windows boxes should be able to see this and we can share documents. Is it as simple as that?

Ultimately I would like to see the samba share from home but lets take this one step at a time.

Yes is the short answer.

Have a read of http://us3.samba.org/samba/docs/man/...html#id2554243 for the most basic of sharing servers, but also have a look through the contents of http://us3.samba.org/samba/docs/man/...TO-Collection/.

Decide what type of share you want (you can have basic anonymous shares as per the example above, or restrict certain shares to certain users.

Note that beyond the basic anonymous example given, you will need to create individual samba users on the server.

Anyway, have a read and come back with any specific questions you may have.
