yet another samba question

I have installed Samba no probs. and I can read/write to all the shares (on my linux box) from my xp box...

Except the share that is in my /home/* directories...

I have tried using swat to configure the share with users etc.. but nothing. when I try to either connect or map the share, the xp box comes up with the username/password box... but it defaults to \\HOSTNAME\guest

and I can't connect to it.. I have tried linking to another dir outside the /home structure. but still the same thing

Any pointers would be GREATLY appreciated..

You must login with the correct username and password for the user you are using at the moment.

If you have a share for /home/joey
bob will not be able to access this cause its not his home directory.

What problems have you had so far?
Do you have normal users, and directories in /home ?

What do you mean it defaults, you should have a password and username dialog box pop up when asking the machine to access that share.

AutOPSY thx for the answer....

Little more info - I have 4 shares running (all on the linux box) that I can read/write to from the xp box here is some of the code:

Code:
[WWW]
        comment = Web Area
        writeable = yes
        path = /home/jesse/www
        public = yes

[tunes]
        comment = MP3s
        path = /tunes
        read only = No
        guest ok = Yes

[Pictures]
        comment = Photos
        path = /userpics
        read only = No
        guest ok = Yes
I can access the tunes and pictures one no prob... but when I try to write stuff to the /home/jesse/www dir (virutual domain in apache). Samba returns the "write protected/disc full" message.
I know when I write stuff to the other shares the ownership is set to nobody:nogroup.
I have also tries adding "users = jesse" instead of "public = yes"...

one last question.. do the users on my xp box have to line up with the linux box. Cause I am loged on to the xp box as "dad".... (easily changed).

Thanks

Jesse

I think you need a "homes" definition in your smb.conf file. Here is one that works for me.

[homes]
browseable = no
comment = Home Directories
hide dot files = no
directory mask = 0775
write list = cliff
writeable = yes
create mask = 0664
valid users = cliff

Hope this helps.

camorri - put that in... that's great, I can map the drive (Z: in windows XP) at least now.. But still can not write to it.. do the users have to match? IE.. username logged on windows machine, match the linux user?

EDIT: yes it does matter... (just incase future people have this prob). your client username, in my case the user in windows xp must match the user in your smb.conf file..

Thanks to both of you for your help!

This may not be the answer you're looking for, but I use "force user" and "force group". That way anyone accessing a user's home share connects as that user and any documents they edit retain the original ownership. Would probably be a security risk in a larger environment, but works great for my little office LAN.

[HOME_CRITO]
comment = /home/crito
force user = crito
writeable = yes
wide links = no
public = yes
force group = crito
path = /home/crito
