RPM Distro that is easy to get running in text mode.
I am looking for a distro that uses the RPM package management system, so I can learn it (Already used to Deb). But my computer is NOT powerfull. So I would want it to have a text-based installer like debian's. And also be able to installed so that it is only like... Slakware with A and AP (Mabey L too, I cant remember if that was needed...) once done, or Debian with only "Standard System Utilities" selected.
I cant seem to find a Fedora disk that meets these requirements.
Anyone know one that fits into this stuff?
Fedora is bleeding-edge; CentOS is a very stable (comparable to Debian Stable) RPM distro that's good for learning. The "netinstall" option gives you the choice whether to install optional software components (minimal install, server, desktop, etc.).
It's strange that you mention your hardware is a problem, but then don't tell us your hardware specs. Without that info it's difficult to help you, except to suggest you Google "Fedora hardware requirements" or "CentOS hardware requirements." I personally would not attempt a Fedora install with less than 1gb RAM, whereas 512mb should be adequate for CentOS.
It is a vaio desktop with 256 megs of ram. Hard drive space shouldn't be a problem, at 61 gigs. It has a pentium 4 (not sure which one, pretty sure it isn't a prescott) Anything with RPM that can run in that cramped of specs?
Also what about Scientific Linux? Can it run in that space?
Throw another stick of RAM in there and you should be able to run CentOS (or Scientific, they are basically the same thing: clones of Red Hat) just fine.
