emacs and info and rpm in text mode
I plan to work in text mode with a 64meg laptop system. Mandrake 10+ pro installed great but it's more geared to GUI.
If you work in text, it doesn't look like info is installed but I think the info pages (texinfo) are included. I also installed emacs because it didn't seem to be in the standard installation. I have 3 questions.
1. Is info installed by default and I just can't find it (why the info pages if not the program)? What is info-install which is part of the installation?
2. I installed emacs but it isvery slow to load, very slow. And it sometimes crashes when I issue a command. Is there someway to make it load quicker in text mode?
3. It's hard to figure what is installed and where to install things? Any suggestions? If I bypass rpm will the database of installed packages be up-to-date or will I have to maintain my own list of source installations?
Sorry if these questions are dumb; I'm just getting started with Linux.
Thanks
Eric
