RedHat 8.0 Problem

I am having a problem with RH 8.0. I can't go any higher than 8.0 with my current hardware. (I could, I guess, but it would run really slowly...) I'm running it on a Compaq Deskpro EN Series with 64 MB of memory and a 344 (or so) MHz CPU. I have a 30GB disk drive. Linux takes up the /boot partition, the lvg0/root partition, and the lvg0/swap partition. Lvg0 stands for Logical Volume Group 0. I have been having a series of problems, all at once. First, everything boots fine after a clean install. Then I mess around for a while, setting the system up the way I like it. I reinstall my backup files. This is just a copy of the homes, my /var/www folder, and my /root folder. Then I would get errors with the rm, mount, and rpm programs. There may be other programs. So, one time I tried a FTP install. Big mistake! It took 27 hours , and I still had the same problem. Finally I got around to the common sence idea of not installing my backups. It worked fine for a while. Then it began to have problems again. I ran the rm command and it gave me a bunch of non-sence:

rm: invalid option -- i
u
]SVWj9u[root@alloscomp c]# _

Anyone have any idea what is wrong and how I can fix it?? It also says "Cannot open font file latarcyrheb-sun16" when I login. And it gives about 5000 "invalid instruction" errors on shutdown, before freezing totally. If I shutdown, I won't beable to boot back up, because of a hosed mount command.

Eric
