Redhat 8.0 locks up!

I have Rehat 8.0, on a Toshiba Tecra 8000 laptop. It has been running fine for weeks. I use KDE and KWrite to write c and then compile it. It is not hooked up on a network. I am not dialed into the internet. I am only typing in Kwrite and it freezes up tight after ~15 minutes. It won't do anything, it responds to no key combinations such as ctrl-alt-backspace. I mean nothing! I have to power it off. The only changes I have made to it recently is to configure it to look for an NIS server, when I do hook it up to my network. It does not stall on bootup trying to find the server, after it sees there is not one it uses the local pwd file. The laptop has an s3 video card with 8 meg ram, that Redhat found with no probs on the install.

use /opt/kde/bin/kwrite to run kwrtie from the command line and see what is echoed to stdout/stderr when kwrite burps - you mgiht get some clues from that. It's possible that closing a few othe kde process that are running will allieviate the issue.

Alternatively, grab the latest sources/rpms and rebuild

Thanks for the Info! I think I found it though. I had named the c program I was practicing on strings.c. I don't think it liked it, once I deleted it, and tried a different name, it seems to be working now. I will also try what you said just in case.
