I used the up2date tool to upgrade my kernel but no luck. The first time I did the upgrade I went from 2.4.7 (came with the CD) to 2.4.9-10. After booting (using GRUB) into the new kernel I noticed that my ATI video card and ethernet card were wanting removal by kudzu. So I figured maybe they were going to get reconfigured, nope removed. I then tried modprobe etc. but the cards were no longer being found.
I then rebooted back to the origional kernel and kudzu reloaded the cards and everything once again worked.
I left it booted that way (it is my WebServer and mail server) until version 2.4.9-31 showed up as an update. thinking I might have better luck, I tried the update again. Same results. It appears as though the i586 kernel has changed and what ever the change is, my P200MMX based machine is no longer going to work with any of the new kernels.
Since I have been programming for close to 20 years, I'm not afraid of compiling a kernel, but before I go through the bazziolion question form, is there something simple I can try first?
'Fraid not (as far as I'm aware). For detailed instructions on kernal compilation, check-out the Kernel HOWTO. It's really not too scary, just make sure you backup any important files, and I include your nice new, working .config file from under the kernel tree - the number of times I've gone through a completely unneccesary full recompilation because I forgot to backup this file...
