PCLinuxOS startup problems

Due to peer pressure (don't ask), I decided to try PCLinuxOS in Virtual Box. It installed OK, but at first I couldnt log into my user, just root. Something must of happened and I can now. Synaptic can't "fetch" anything. I wanted to install gaim or pidgin, but gaim doesn't install and pidgin isnt in synaptic. Also, my sound card is not read or working in it. I get the msg that it cannot find /dev/dsp as the directory does not exist. Any ideas?

You have to set Virtual Box to allow sound and networking. However, I forget where that is. It's in one of those menus where you can select ALSA as the output and enable the networking.

OK, well I just installed it on my hdd, and the sound works, so that is good...

But Synaptic seems corrupt, it can't find a lot of files.

and here I thought everything "just works" in PCLinuxOS.

Are you sure you've got all the correct repositories enabled, etc?..

Sorry, I don't have a lot of experience with that Distro..

Good luck

I haven't had any problems with PCLinuxOS, everything's run fairly smoothly. Maybe something messed up with the installation, did you check to see if anything failed? But yeah, it does sadden me that Pidgin isn't in Synaptic.
