Online Update in Suse 8.1
It seems to just hang when it tries to initialize with htp, maybe the snow storm has screwed up their servers,

i don't think it's hung, it's just dead slow. that text box will stay on screen until it figures out which updates are available.and it takes forever(10 minutes or more). it used to work great before version 8.1. hopefully it will be fixed soon.

change installation source
it takes a long time for me too. if you're not getting connected at all, try changing your installation source (suse.com, leo.com ect.)

I use apt for SuSE for grabing new packages not available from YaST2 Software Install/Uninstall.
I use fou4s for automatic online updating.
Those two package is a must have for a backup if YaST or its Online Update fails ;-)
Have a lot of fun!

Yes, just try different ftps and leave it on for awhile. It takes a long time to connect.
