Hello. I am new to the Linux enviroment and need help in deciding what version to use. I have seen Lycoris and it seems to be theclosest thing I can find to a steady OS but I don't know if it would suit my needs. I want to use Linux as a second OS for now and in the future possibly make it my primary if all goes well. I need input on which distribution to use and what kind of hardware setup would be best. I am not a power user except when it comes to windows. I am glad to say I look forward to using Linux and hope it goes well.
I don't know Licoris so I can't say if it is good or bad to your needs ..
Although I can recomend to you either Suse or Mandrake bacause they are good distros for new linux users as the don't require much knowledge and you can do almost all the tasks with the GUI.
My new "newbie recommendation" is Ubuntu, give it a shot it's supposed to be really good. Lycoris isn't so crash hot, I'm not sure of my facts so I won't comment but yeah, I'm saying Ubuntu
I went ahead and got my hands on a copy of Red Hat Enterprise WS 3. I absolutely love it. The install was easy. The only thing I have a little trouble with is using the console and installing some programs. Other than that I am happy with it. It is relatively easy and I plan to migrate completely to Linux in a few months. The only thing I can't figure out is the playing of music Cd's. I don't get any sound. What could be the cause of that?
My sound card is a Sound Blaster Live LS 5.1. I can here the test soudn and watch flash videos from G4 Tech TV. Is seem that when I use the CD Player it just won't play any sound.

nelis,
you've said you're using RHEL3, it doesn't come/use alsa by default, infact it doesn't include alsa.
it uses oss for sound, so try running "aumix" in the console, make sure cd volume is not muted, raise the volume to make it audible, use the arrows keys. what player are u using for playing CD, xmms, cdplay?

Using cd player that came with the OS and Kaboodle. Ran aumix and checked the settings and turned everything up. Didn't work in CD Player. don't have XMMS far as I know. Do I need it and if not how do I fix the no cd sound? Where would I get XMMS.
I put a audio cd in and it spins up. The system launches the default CD Player and the player starts playing. It recovers the CD info from the web and displays it. I take a gander at my cd drive. Light is lit up like its reading the disk. The only thing missing is the sound. I can hear everything else when I online and such but not my audio CDs.
