I tried to boot Drake 9.1 this morning and it just hangs on the third item on the start up...
"Configuring Kernel Parameters"
I let it sit there for about 5 minutes and got impatient and rebooted into Windows.
The last time I shut it down (about 3 days ago) it worked fine. I had no problems, I didn't install any new software. All I did was normal stuff, checked email (evolution), used IM (GAIM) and surfed with Galeon. It shut down fine, now it won't do anything. Any ideas why this happened? I've had it installed about 1 week and booted into it probably about 10 times before with no problems.
Also, I tried booting using the first disk and using the console but I did not see anyway to recompile the kernel and I unfortunately am not experience enough to know off hand how to do this at the command prompt on my own.
Here is my hardware -
ATHLON XP 1700+
512 MEG SDRAM 133
60 GIG Hard Drive (8 GIG XP-FAT32, 9.7 GIG EXT 2, 40 GIG FAT32)
Thanks in advance for any help!
Boot from CD and choose update. I have fouled things up beyond belief in MDK 9.0, and that has worked for me every time. (Not the 'techie' way to do things, but then, I am not a techie). Only takes about 5 0r 10 min. and you don't lose any of your data or settings.
I tried to boot from the cd and choose update. The result said that it was successful but when I tried to reboot, I received the same error. I will try to use fsck and see if I get any info from that.
to make a long story short, I tried to install RH 9.0. I thought starting over from scratch might take care of everything. I was wrong. I had to delete the EXT2 partition and manually partition because RH 9.0 couldn't automatically do it for some reason. Then after a clean install, it hangs up at EXACTLY the same place - configuring kernel parameters! I booted to the rescue option and typed fsck, when I did, I got
WARNING: Coulding open /etc/fstab, no such file or directory.
Now I believe that fstab tells Linux what all of the drives are, why wouldn't it be able to find this? What do I need to do to get this working?
I was afraid of this. No one knows what's going on with my system either. I think I am just going back to Windows. I have XP on my system and whether I like it or not, it is just more reliable than either RH or Drake. I have tried many distros, just hoping that this new release would be the one that is easy to use and actually works for a non-techie like myself. None have quite been there. I bought a book, "The Red Hat 7.3 Bible", I have read these boards and a couple others. It always seems like something goes wrong that I cannot fix and no one else can either. So, I reinstall and reinstall...I appreciate all of your help but I am done trying to convince myself that there is a viable option out there for me other than Windows.
I don't know why /etc/fstab doesn't exist. It sounds as if you are having serious problems. I would remove ALL partitions then start the install from scratch.
As for palm1 - have you tried installing Xfree86 4.1?
