Looking for a distribution that would fit these criteria
I'm looking for a distro that is more bleeding-edge in its packages and not out of date, and is also relatively easy to install and get running, so a distro such as Arch is probably not what I'm looking for as far as the latter criteria are concerned. Does anyone have any recommendations? If there is no way around installing a more difficult distribution I'm open to learning.
I highly suggest going over to distrowatch.com and checking out all of the distros to see what you would like. As far as what you are looking for, have you tried openSuse or debian?
I've never tried openSuse and I'm running Debian on my computer right now. I like it and it's very stable and all but the software and kernal are both so out of date that I'd rather move to another distro that is consistently up to date.
You could try Slackware current? It's not quite bleeding edge but it's a good mix of stability and up-to-date software. You said you dislike Fedora but perhaps looking at some of the spins might be worthwhile, depending on what about it you didn't like. Debian unstable might be something to look at too if you haven't already, since you're already on debian switching to Sid shouldn't be too difficult - just change your /etc/apt/sources.list accordingly.
