Built From Scratch?
craigs1987, If you do a search or read our Distro Review section or read through the LQ 2003 Awards you will see what everyone prefers to use. Weirdly, this question crops up, on average, 3 times a day or more - yes, your's is worded slightly differently - do we really, really need yet another thread like this?
Slackware is my favourite, why? Because the first distro I used was RedHat, 2 weeks later after nothing but headaches I got Slackware and never looked back. It does what I want. I use it on my main comp.
Vector is definately the best distro for my laptop though, very small, and leaves me a lot of extra space on my HD (well not really since it was only a 4 gb to start w/) and my gf uses this on her laptop as well.
I carry Slax around in my wallet all the time... Why slax? cuz it fits on a MINI-CDRW, and it uses VESA for it vid. driver for X. Knoppix annoys me. It always tries to guess the best driver to use for X (which would be good), but it hasn't worked on a computer I've tried yet!
You will learn much by trying to understand why this question is ill-posed. It is akin to asking "what is the best chess move?" For most people, there is not a best distro, but rather a best distro at that stage in their familiarity with linux. Most people go through a progression of increasing configuration.
He just asked a question that is repeated like almost everyday!
OK craigs1987, as you can see there isn't any BEST distro. But there's always YOUR FAVORITE distro.
Mine is Mandrake, and the reason is its hardware recognition. So far I've tried SuSE, Mandrake, Fedora, Slax, Yoper; and none of them has beaten Mandrake 10.
