Gentoo issues

so installed gentoo 1.1a and i got at the first boot an error messege before the system runs down the actual boot process that i ahd fail to compile devfs support into the kernel and that this was needed...
it boots i get a red lil * next to a fs unmountable error....so i cd to /usr/src/linux make menuconfig re-compile adding the support for devfs as well as mount at boot and debug

i then mv /boot/bzImage /boot/bzImage.orig and then cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot

i look in /boot for grub and the menu.lst and there is only bzImage and bzImage.orig.

i reboot and the messege about the initilization script detecting the kernel has not been compiled with devfs support is still there but the file system warning once the boot sequence continues is gone...all green

now i am not a linux guru and i am amazed that i got gentoo loaded but where the hell is grub and how do you edit the menu.lst ?

i have never used grub before this i have always used lilo.

also i get a no hostname error in boot telling me to set a hostname in /etc/hostname but i have no such file...i used the dhcpcd cuz i have a lil gateway/proxie box that is set for ics...is there a configuration file i should edit that will tell the system to use a default local host

anyone ?

thanks
