dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg ends before screen(monitor) guide

hi guys.

I have this strange and quite annoying situation.
OS: Xubuntu 8.04
Subject: NVIDIA / Resolution / DPI

when I sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, the first part of the guide run perfectly, but the screen/nvidia driver part, it ends..

even with -phigh it ends at once I try to reconfigure anything..

its like the screen part don't work proberly.

I cant enable the nvidia driver either.. I can enable it through restricted hardware.. I restart, it works with nvidia.. but still no right resolution choices and DPI suck still. well thats another problem, but first I want to fix this somehow, with your help..

the 2nd time I reboots, the nvidia is disabled again.. WTF ??
and I can start over..

How do I manage to KEEP my nvidia driver active even when rebooting ?
the mark (save for future sessions) is ofcause enabled when I shutdown/reboot.

and after that.. I want to have my DPI set to 96 (nvidia somehow wants it to be 128dpi. way too big) and editing Xft.dpi: 96 inside .config/xfce4/Xft.xrdb doesn't help a shi..

please help me..

edit<--
status: solved

installed nvidia-settings, used it to overwrite my xorg.conf and set the DPI in it also.. works great now, also after rebooting..
