I don't want to start any flame wars or anything. I just have had a problem with debian lately that bugs me. If I don't do apt-get dist-upgrade at least once a week then I get all these dependency errors. I have done things that are supposed to fix them, but they are not working.
Also, it takes a while to configure things in debian if it is not recognized right away. Now, my question is: Would SUSE fix these problems? YAST does not need to be run all the time in order for everything to stay working, and mostly everything is setup for you at the install. It is not that I can't set it up, because I can and I have, but it is a hassle sometimes. Then upgrading the distro messes up on debian for me because I do not always do dist-upgrade all the time.
I am going to try SUSE, so I am not asking the usual "best distro" question. I just want some opinions on SUSE compared to debian in a good way, not the flame war way.
If you have any other distro reccomendations for me, then go ahead and post them. I mostly want something like debian, but...
- easier, less time to set things up
- upgrade doesn't have to been done once a week
- fast and stable
- has fairly new software
- fairly light
- something to install software like apt or yast
So basically a debian with easier setup and no need to have to upgrade to not get all those errors
online update can be configured to check for updates daily(like a cron job) or only check when you launch online update, your choice. you can use yast for the "official patches" or apt4suse is available for the latest greatest. they both use the same rpm database, so using apt doesn't mean you can no longer use yast. it's as light as you want to make it, left at the defaults it will install kde plus office apps, but you can select/deselect at install time, basic xserver plus fluxbox, windowmaker, whatever.
