cannot log in...pam error

hi....i just finished the 2 day build of gentoo from stage 1 and I booted it, everything worked, so I rebooted again without doing anything to the system and now I cannot log in, even as root. I am logged in single user mode kernel parameter now. the error it gives me is "PAM Failure. Critical Error." /var/log/messages says that it can't find the PAM configuration file...and it's right....there is nothing but an sshd folder inside /etc/pam.d. There should be a "other" file. Why has this happened? How can I use my linux system? I even tried to re-emerge PAM and tried compiling a 2.6 kernel (was using 2.4). Any help appreciated...I'll be standing by. Thanks.
