hi
i am planning to install Linux on my system, I have four distros with me, please tell me which will be the best option for me.
The distros I have are 1) Red Hat 9
2) Peanut 9.5
3) Mandrake 9.1
4) Knoppix 3.2
My computer config is
PIII 600
196 MB Ram
40+8 GB HDD
Samtron 15" monitor
Yamaha XG sound card
ATi Radeon 7500 Pro 64 MB
LG DVD/CDRW combo
Mercury CD Rom
Logitech mouse
Mercury keyboard
I mainly use my comouter only to surf the net, a little bit of word processing and home entertainment. Will I be able to get drivers for the above componants and from where? What other distribution should I get if the above are not suitable. I am a first time Linux user (actually yet to use), so if my questions seem tedious, please don't mind.
I would also appreciate any other tips you may have
Mandrake 9.1, most here that use/used it like it's easy of use. I would say Slackware 9.0, it runs a lot faster that Mandrake. It does not come with OpenOfiice but you could download it.
Drivers:
You can get drivers for you Radeon card from ATI
You might need to know the horizonal and vertical refresh rates for it.
Your sound card I am not sure about, but you can find the module on the net.
The other should be built into the kernel.
How do you connect to the internet? If you have a Win modem you will have problems there. I would suggest buying an external modem li a US robodics.
Mandrake 9.1 is possibly the best all-round distribution for new Linux users - its easy to install - easy to use and comes with lots of software for doing all your daily tasks and more.
You should be ok with most of your components - (not sure about the sound card) - however - you can often sort odds and ends out later - the main thing is just to get installed and get going.
(You could always try Knoppix first just to get a feel for Linux - it is bootable from the cd-rom drive straight into KDE 3.1 - no need to install on your hard drive - a good way to have a quick look at Linux)
