Xfce desktop messed up

I am using Linux Mint 18.2 and Xfce.
I logged out and did ctrl-alt-F1 to go to a console.
I didn't know how to get back to the GUI.
I tried startx and it went to a GUI but the desktop is messed up.
The icons are moved and the bar that was at the bottom is at the top, and there is a small collection of large buttons at the bottom of screen.
I logged out and shutdown the computer.
I started it up and logged in but the same messed up desktop is there.
I am not sure what happened or how to fix it.

You can start over by removing ~/.config/xfce4 or make your modifications there to fix it.

Did you figure out how to get from console back to GUI?
It's ctrl-alt-F7 on most systems.

No, I had not.
I tested ctrl-alt-F7 just now and it worked. Thanks.
