Messed up xfce pkg install

Tried to use slackpkg to download and upgrade xfce4.4.3 onto my freshly reinstalled Slackware12.0 and reconfigured Xorgconfig to work w/xfce4.4.2
xfce4.2 tool panel crashed a few times. I then tried to upgrade xfce4.4.3 and when I couldn't get it work...I used pkgtool to remove pkg and tried again...finally I removed pkg again. I have been reading forever but still
don't know howto proceed. Although I used pkgtool to remove xfce4.4.3 it seems I still have it on my system or just residual parts of it.

I have used src2pkg a few times before and was wondering if I just download
the source for xfce 4.4.3 from rworkman's page src2pkg should build a compatible pkg. for slackware12.0, right? I have given up on upgrading - My skill level is not up to writing and manipulating files w/o xfce apps. I
am trying but will take me a while yet, so please help me get my system back to normal. Also was wondering if maybe I could use rsync after reading about it but I am still wouldn't know exactly howto do it. Thanks

Code:
u@h~>slocate xinitrc
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.fluxbox
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.twm
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.fvwm2
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.xfce
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.icewm
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.wmaker
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.blackbox
/etc/xfce/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc
/home/umm/.xinitrc
/home/two/.xinitrc

put the disk in login root put the cd in. type mount /dev/cdrom
then cd /mnt/cdrom/slackware/xap or Xap. then type pkgtool it will ask you if you want to install a program in this directory push enter then keep say no till xfc comes up and install. good luck.
down load it from slackware 12.0 is still being updated. put it where you want it and pkgtool install it.you will want to stay with 4.. what ever came with 12.0 the gtk that runs that enviroment is different. and so is some of you binding qt programs.
unless upgrading other programs that run xfce.

Drakeo, before I got psyched by the upgrade bug, I had installed an xfce pkg built slackbuild by rworkman that worked smoothly on my slack12, but I can't seem to find it? Seems like it was adopted for 12.2 ver? Could I build an equivalent from src w/src2pkg? Thanks though for your quick response...I am up till I find a resolution. Already wasted too much time on this.

rworkman had a 4.4.3 package but he may have removed it since 4.4.3 is now in 12.2. Maybe you can try the 12.2 tgz package, it will probably work on 12.0 as well (if it doesn't, you can remove it).

llgar, thing is that i did try with to install xfce 4.4.3 with slackpkg, then deleted it with pkgtool and I have tons of files. I am thinking src build would probably create a compatible package from src2pkg would be the easiest for me if I don't have to mess with script configuration. Maybe a combination of slackbuild and src2pkg script this way the script cleans up residual files, no? BTW is stripping a bin mean clearing it of files? Thanks

Well I don't know hot slackpkg works but if you somehow installed a tgz package, uninstalling it should remove all stuff it installs. Have you removed 12.0's own 4.4.2 before attempting to install yours? I don't know why you have leftover files but maybe something like the following happened: You had a package with prefix, say, /usr, then you did installpkg (not upgradepkg) a package with prefix /usr/local. So when you uninstall the latter one, the files under /usr from the first one are not cleared.

In this case I'd do the following: Try to install the slackpkg version of XFCE and then uninstall. Then install & uninstall the XFCE that comes with 12.0. That is, install and then uninstall any XFCE packages that may have been present on your system. This should clear the files. Then try installing the one you want to use.

thanks, llgar found the 4.4.3 ver removed it with pkgtool and used the slack12 disc to install 4.4.1 ver again. What happened was when updating with slackpkg it upgraded to current slack12.2 so i did a fresh install of 12.0 again. I didn't know howto update specific to a specific version so slackpkg automatically goes for current ver packages.
I have xfce 4.4.1 running now. Its hard learning to manage and manipulate files without gui.. especially trying to get a download into a specific dir and folder - i'll learn but it takes tons of reading and time. I have icewm and fluxbox running as other users.
Is there a way to get firefox and seamonkey download managers to download to a folder of your choice instead of desktop? Once I closed the browsers I couldn't find the download again, using command line.

In Firefox preferences you can select "Ask me every time where to save the file" or something like that. The console commands for package (un)installation related tasks are

installpkg
upgradepkg
removepkg

It's fairly simple indeed, you may soon find out that automated package management is not that necessary. In case you want to continue using slackpkg, it should have a configuration file where you can set which repository to use. You should set it to use 12.0 packages.

Btw, you say you did a fresh install of 12.0. Then why not go for 12.2? It's newer, better and has the same requirements as 12.0.

llagar, i have 100pc, III600e, HPT 366 based system w/AGP 1-2 video tolerance in which I use an old ati r128 xserver driver.
Lib improvements that provide smoother, stable and higher security functions are my main interest for the use of this system since its goal is network server oriented.
My level of skill is such that I suffer w/o a "File Manager" till I can get past that its best I stick with a version that I already know.
I want to be able to take this os apart and put it back together on my own. Don't need all the latest visual and audio technology to run netserver functions.
I do need to be able to get on that command line, to read and write to any file, edit, config, mv, cp, rm, mnt, unmount disks, read scripts, write scripts, mkdir, download to where-ever, ftp, telinit.
Wish one of you guys lived in my neighborhood b/c if u show me once... i cld read up and then know what man pages, howto, etc. are referring to instead of googling my life away. lol
I'll get there, hopefully sooner than later. I have a 2nd 160gb ata hdd on this box that un touched, lol what does that tell u?
Its for my 'Dream Servers'. On this box I went from dual boot 98 & slackware 8 to single boot Slackware and every fresh install worked right out of the gate. Slackware has been good to me although I am still at some level of noob
Have an xp core2duo graphics box for when i get around to it b/c slackware keeps me busy.
Its all good I will update this install just as i need probably w/ rob's slackbuilds I trust his builds and src2pkg gnashley is really instructive in his support till i familiarize myself slackpkg configs.
Slackpkg is so simple i let it upgrade my orig slack
12 install when i just had started to use it for a dhcpd upgrade, lol. Of course it went right to current which later I read was a 'Big NO No' b/c u have to go frm 12.0-12.1 first! But it was sooo easy I got carried away with it! LOL
Thanks soo much for your responsive support, its people like u that give me the courage to post questions that have such seemingly easy answers for others.
BTW how u startup a script or execute one frm cmd line?
