Xfce 4.12 Notification Bell

Hi All,

Still getting used to Xfce 4.12. There is a notification bell icon in the upper-right corner of the screen. Does anyone know what type of notifications this app reports? Also, is there an app that notifies for new available packages? Currently I'm just periodically running aptitude safe-upgrade to check.

Thank as always,

CJ

Due to your post, (thanks!), I just installed the notification bell app. I am using Xfce 4.12, too, with Debian 10. So I haven't used it much. I did notice that if you left-click on the bell icon and then click "Notification settings", there is an "Applications" tab that lists some default applications. There is one item named "org.gnome.Software" -- don't know if that's what you are looking for. I didn't see a way to add other applications.

Sorry for the delay in response. I haven't received any notifications yet and there have been package updates (I'm running Testing). I'll just wait and see what shows up.

Take Care,

Good point. It seems to be distribution specific.
I've been running Xfce for years on Slackware64 and have never seen the aforementioned bell. Didn't know it even existed. BTW, Slackware usually runs applications as they came from the producer/author without any changes, if at all possilbe.

I always thought of slackware as install what you need distribution. When I was testing debian 9.x cause I never tried it. I was not prepared for it not having cups printing or the GUI for adding printers. If I ever use debian for a clients old pc I have extended notes on helper tools and programs. Though its not my first choice for new users. I get the minimal aspect but today most want printing service.

The recommended full Slackware installation includes CUPS. If it once didn't, it was a long, long, long time ago. If you need a GUI to install a printer, KDE does a nice job, Xfce will bring up the CUPS interface in a browser and if you don't like either one of those and if it is a HP printer, HPLIP is included in Slackware.
BTW, I've been bouncing between Xfce-4.12 and 4.14, and KDE-4 and 5 for the last couple of months. Yesterday I re-installed Xfce-4.12 and there was the notification bell in the lower right hand corner. It is a plug-in on the panel and can be removed by right clicking on the bell and selecting, "remove."

I don't have it in Xubuntu, but in PCLinuxOS it's on the panel and can be configured with the Settings Manager.
