sidhantdas, you have to check:
1. What kind of drivers are you using (grep Driver /var/log/Xorg.log), it's a great chance that you are using generic drivers and should install the specific drivers for you graphics card
2. If the drivers are right, try the command "xrandr" in your console and write what kind of output it gives. You could hack into xorg.conf (if there is such) file and change the settings, so that it can give you bigger resolution (even though this is not advisable)
