Then just edit your modes listed in your XF86Config file in /etc/X11

Dude, settle down
It's not Slackware, it's just that Slack doesn't set everything up automatically -- you can even use the old XF86Config file from your old install, if you saved it. You just have to change a couple of things :
I'm assuming you want 1024x768 or 1280x1024
under the "Monitor" section of your XF86Config-4 file add:
Code:
ModeLine "1280x1024" 135.00 1280 1296 1440 1688 1024 1025 1028 1066 +
now go down to Section "Screen"
change all the first Modes lines to "1280x1024"
Then, you should be in business, my man.
Thing about linux, is it does exactly what you tell it to --- and it reads what you tell it to do through configuration files, usually . It's usually just amatter of changing the values to the right ones.

All the basic hardware drivers you should need are in the kernel sources.
You said "startx" broke. What does it say is wrong? Look for lines starting with (WW) or (EE) for Warning, and Error, respectively.
We can't really tell what you need, through what you've told us-- so tell us a bit about your system.
--Cpu
--Vid Card
--Monitor
--Motherboard
--Distro (Slackware 9 I guess)
The output of the command "lsmod" as root
the output of the command "cat /proc/pci"
Post these, and we should be able to help more.
Please, please please, realize that we're here to help and are mortal humans, not magicians who know exactly what you're running, and how to fix *everything*. For one, you didn't supply an iota of information about your system, and changing resolutions has a lot to do with video card and monitor.
