Prompt for environment from *DM

In one of my machines, I must use either GDM or KDM. When a user logs in, I want the login manager to prompt the user as to which environment to use by default (ie. KDE or GNOME). However, once the user chooses that, he/she should never be prompted again, as the default should then be set for that particular user. Personally, it's particularly important that the prompt appears for first-time users.
